Axial rotation

The tibia rotates inwards when the knee joint bends. This axial rotation is primarily guided by the muscles and ligaments, and to a lesser extent by the joint surfaces. Under load this motion is fairly restricted, but it becomes appreciable when there is no load on the knee. It facilitates walking and running because it makes foot positions more stable.
